CHENNAI: TVK MLA JCD Prabhakar is set to become the speaker of the Tamil Nadu assembly, as he filed his nomination papers for the post with assembly secretary K Srinivasan on Monday.Prabhakar, who won from Thousand Lights in the 2026 assembly election, is likely to be elected unopposed when the newly constituted house convenes on Tuesday.

The senior leader, a former AIADMK MLA who joined TVK ahead of the polls, is among the senior-most legislators in the ruling combine and played a key organisational role in Vijay’s campaign and manifesto preparation.His appointment is being seen as an attempt by the Vijay-led government to balance the party’s youthful image with legislative experience.The 73-year-old leader had defeated DMK’s Ezhilan Naganathan in Thousand Lights by over 12,000 votes.
