District magistrate Lalit Mohan Rayal has ordered the municipal body to audit all boats for environmental compliance and operational safety. Any boat found leaking hazardous substances during maintenance or operation will be confiscated immediately.
The Public Works Department has also been instructed to ensure that chemicals from roadwork on Lower Mall Road are properly contained and do not flow into the water.
Officials believe the contamination is linked to ongoing road repairs and lakeside boat maintenance. DM Rayal emphasised that as a “Sarovar Nagri” (City of Lakes), Nainital’s survival depends on its ecosystem.
“No form of environmental negligence will be tolerated. Clear instructions have been issued. Any chemical discharge into the water body will result in the strictest possible action,” the DM told TOI.tolerated.
