Tipper truck runs over two women in Salem
Salem: Two women were crushed to death under the wheels of a tipper truck after their motorcycle skidded during rain near Gangavalli here on Saturday night, causing them to fall on the road.The Thalaivasal police identified the deceased as Jayakodi, 50, wife of Mohan, of Pakkambadi village in Chinnasalem taluk in Kallakurichi district, and her mother's sister P Valliammal, 70, from the same village. According to a police officer, the accident took place when the duo were returning to their village via Periyeri village after visiting a relative's house near Gangavalli on a two-wheeler around 9pm on Saturday. "It was raining heavily. As they moved off the road to make way for a tipper truck coming from behind, the two-wheeler skidded and both women fell on the road. The track ran over them, killing them on the spot," the officer said. The driver stopped the tipper truck a short distance away and fled, the officer said. When alerted, the Thalaivasal police and tahsildar Jayakumar reached the spot. Police recovered the bodies and sent them to the govt hospital at Attur for postmortem. Police registered a case and launched a manhunt for the tipper truck driver.
