CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered the revamp and renovation of Amma Unavagams across the state, following complaints over the quality and taste of food served at the subsidised eateries.At present, 383 Amma Unavagams are functioning under the Greater Chennai Corporation, while another 237 are being operated by municipal corporations and municipalities in the state. According to an official release, the chief minister reviewed the issue with senior govt officials after concerns were brought to his attention regarding the standard of food being served in recent months. He directed officials to upgrade infrastructure facilities at the canteens, immediately procure necessary cooking equipment, and ensure uninterrupted supply of hygienic and tasty food to the public.The chief minister ordered that the expenses for renovation work and procurement of equipment be met from the general funds of corporations and municipalities.
