Chennai: Considering Congress joined the TVK-led alliance after the state assembly elections, the alliance equations inside Greater Chennai Corporation council are set to see a sea-change. Congress, with 13 councillors, had been a part of the ruling front in the DMK-majority council, which enjoyed a total of 153 of 200 councillors.
Alliance partners such as CPM, CPI, VCK and IUML, which have only extended outside support to TVK govt, are maintaining a similar strategy. Together, the alliance partners account for 23 councillors. TVK has the support of one independent councillor, Rajan Barnabass of Manali, who joined the party earlier this year.
Amirda Varshini, Congress councillor from Mylapore's ward 126, said the plan is to take a call based on the issue and the council proceedings on that day. "Naturally, we will be in an opposing position as the alliance changed, but our responses will be based on the issues that come up. We've maintained a good rapport with Mayor R Priya too," she said.
VCK councillor B Yazhini said they too will go on an issue-based approach. "We have given outside support to TVK in the state. In the council too, we will respond to issues based on how the floor is on the specific day," she said.
