MP Rekha Sharma slams parties for opposing Nari Shakti Vandan Act
Chandigarh: Criticising the opposition for not extending cooperation in passing the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, Rajya Sabha MP from BJP and former chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW), Rekha Sharma, on Monday said it was unfortunate that when a historic opportunity arose to secure women's constitutional rights, the opposition chose to spread confusion. She said the act was a historic and transformative step towards politically empowering the mothers, sisters and daughters of the country. "The bill provided for a strong foundation for ensuring women's participation in the decision-making process," she said, adding that for years, women were denied adequate representation in Parliament and state assemblies. She said that 33% women's reservation, as home minister Shri Amit Shah clarified, was linked to the delimitation process. Despite this, the opposition's misleading attempts to delink the two amount to an effort to unnecessarily delay women's rights. She said today, women of the country are making their mark in every field, including education, science, administration, defence, sports, entrepreneurship and politics. At such a time, ensuring adequate representation for them in the highest decision-making institutions is both the demand of the times and a necessity of democracy, she added.MSID:: 130395165 413 |
