In2024, cold wave killed 168 in Punjab, 26 in HP: NCRB report
Bathinda: Punjab reported second-highest deaths across the country due to exposure to cold in 2024, while the state reported third-highest deaths in the year due to heat and sunstroke, claimed data released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).Punjab recorded 168 deaths, including 166 males and 2 females, due to exposure to cold, which was only behind Bihar, where 169 died due to the reason. Haryana recorded 95 deaths due to exposure to cold, including 92 males and 3 females, while Himachal Pradesh recorded 26 deaths on the count, including 23 males and 3 females. Across the country, 833 died of excessive cold, which included 739 males and 94 females. Punjab reported maximum 127 deaths due to exposure to cold in 2023, as in all 733 people lost lives across the country.Under heat/sunstroke, 183 lives were lost in Punjab, including 176 males and 7 females, as the state was behind only Bihar, which recorded 422 deaths, and Uttar Pradesh, with 352 deaths. Haryana reported 131 deaths, including 123 males and 8 females, while no death on the count was reported in HP, as the country reported 1,832 deaths, including 1,603 males, 227 female and 2 transgender.Punjab was second to Bihar in deaths due to heat in 2023. Punjab recorded 331 deaths due to heatwaves in 3 years, while 1,634 lost their lives due to heat waves across the country in these three years, as per data. Across the country, 530 persons died due to heat waves in 2020 in 36 states/UTs, 374 died in 2021, and 730 in 2022.Floods killed 45 in HPUnder floods, Punjab lost 11 people, including 7 males and 4 females, in 2024; while HP lost 45, including 28 males and 17 females, with no death in Haryana. In total, 361 lost lives were lost across the country, 289 males and 72 females. In Punjab, one life was lost due to a tornado in 2024.In Himachal Pradesh, 25 people (21 males, 4 females) lost lives due to landslides, 11 (5 males, 6 females) lost lives due to torrential rain, 4 lost lives due to avalanche and 2 lost lives due to forest fire in 2024.Road accidentsIn Haryana, 5,187 people (4,561 males, 625 females and 1 transgender) lost lives in road accidents in total 10,569 cases of accidents, wherein 8,438 sustained injuries, which include 7,068 males and 1,370 females.In Punjab, 4,936 people (4,343 males, 593 females) lost lives in road accidents in total 6,166 cases of accidents wherein 3,407 sustained injuries, which include 2,821 males and 586 females. A total of 175,142 lost lives in road accidents across the country, out of which 149,969 were males, 25,164 females and 9 transgender in 467,967 cases wherein 448,365 people, including 351,549 males, 96,805 females, 11 transgender, sustained injuries.
