Chandigarh:
Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday directed officials to give top priority to the upkeep and management of ponds across the state while ensuring that contaminated water is not discharged into these.
Chairing a meeting of the Haryana Pond and Waste Water Management Authority in Chandigarh, the CM stressed the need for regular cleaning of ponds developed under the ‘Amrit Sarovar Yojana', and maintaining transparency and quality standards in all related works.
He instructed officials to strengthen pond embankments, carry out desilting operations and remove wild grass around ponds. Saini also instructed for the development of walking paths, benches and solar lighting facilities around ponds for public convenience.
Gram panchayats should be made responsible for regular maintenance and inspections, said Saini.
He also asked officials to promote fish farming in large ponds and ensure drains are cleaned before the monsoon season.
