Brace for heat wave conditions: Met dept

Times News NetworkChandigarh: The next few days are likely to be very hot. With temperature expected to rise sharply, the weather department has issued a yellow alert for heat wave conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of above-normal heat across the region.Dry weather is likely to continue for the next five to six days, leading to heat wave conditions between May 18 and May 22. Maximum temperature is expected to rise above 40 degrees Celsius during these days.While severe heat wave conditions are expected mainly in southern and southwestern parts of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and nearby areas are also expected to witness above normal temperatures.Under the yellow alert category, heat is considered tolerable for the general public but may pose moderate health concerns for vulnerable groups, including infants, the elderly and those suffering from chronic illnesses.On Saturday, Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius, which is normal for this period. Minimum temperature settled at 22.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal. However, meteorologists have forecast a steady increase in day temperatures from Sunday onwards.On Sunday, the mercury may touchnearly 40 degrees Celsius in parts of the city and Tricity region.The IMD has advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially in the afternoon. People have also been urged to remain hydrated, wear loose cotton clothing and cover their heads while stepping outdoors.
