Bhubaneswar: Odisha govt on Monday issued a directive to regional transport officers (RTO)s and police to initiate stringent action against those filming social media reels while driving.
“This hazardous trend, which has become a menace, poses significant risks not only to bikers and motorists involved, but also to other road users. We have already initiated action by seizing several vehicles and imposing hefty fines on violators in Bhubaneswar, Khurda and Puri,” transport minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena said.
On Monday, transport secretary Usha Padhee and transport commissioner Amitabh Thakur reviewed the action on complaints received on social media platforms. “There is a surge in incidents where people, often seeking social media fame, engage in reckless behaviour by recording videos while driving and riding bikes. Such actions have been linked to an increase in road accidents. RTOs have been directed to take immediate action to ensure public safety,” Jena said.
Padhee laid stress on awareness campaign highlighting the dangers of distracted driving and the legal consequences of such actions. “We cannot allow the roads to become a stage for dangerous stunts. Our officers will be vigilant, and those found violating traffic laws will face strict penalties,” commissioner Thakur said, adding, “Provisions exist in both Motor Vehicles Act and the BNS for action against such activities.”
