Karnataka Hijab Row Updates: Classes 9, 10 to reopen from Monday, decision on seniors and colleges later

The three-judge bench of the Karnataka high court has begun hearing the petitions questioning the ban on wearing of 'hijabs' (headscarves) by students in colleges. Chief Justice of HC Ritu Raj Awasthi has constituted a full bench comprising himself, Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice Jaibunnisa M Khazi in view of the urgency to hear the matter. Meanwhile, the Supreme court on Thursday declined to urgently list a plea seeking transfer of the petitions from the high court.

The situation in some Karnataka educational institutions has gone so out of hand that in one case the National flag was replaced by a saffron flag. I think the affected institutions should be closed for a week to restore law and order. Teaching can continue online.

Focus on education, says Youth Congress leader
Youth Congress national spokesperson Suraiyya Anjum urged students to focus on education while on campus and not on hijab, saffron shawl or turban. “I am a Muslim. I celebrate Eid, wear hijab with pride and offer namaz five times a day, but all these are restricted to my house. When I step out, I am a proud Indian first,” she said. Anjum added: “One must obey the rules laid down by the school/ college administration. Students and parents must understand attempts are being made by the RSS, PFI and the SDPI to politicise a non-political issue. . . ”
