Karnataka: Youth in saffron scarves heckle Mandya girl in hijab

A student wearing the hijab was heckled and harassed by youth wearing saffron scarves at PES College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Mandya, on Tuesday.

Undeterred, the girl (in pic) chanted ‘Allahu Akbar’ and hit back at them for questioning her religious beliefs.

In a video of the incident which has gone viral, the hijab-clad student is seen walking towards the classroom after parking her two-wheeler at the college parking zone, following which the group of youths began waving saffron scarves at her and shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

When she tries to walk inside the college, the youths follow her and shout slogans. She hits back at them saying it’s improper to behave rudely with a girl. Soon, college principal Mahadeva J and some lecturers rush to the spot and whisk her away before informing police.
The youths leave the spot by the time cops arrive. Mandya SP Yatish N said the incident occurred around 11am but no case has been registered. He added that police will ensure safety of girl students.
Later, the girl made a video identifying herself as Muskan, studying secondyear BCom. She complained about the treatment meted out to her by the youths.
The girl alleged that a majority of them were not from the college but outsiders. Meanwhile, another group of youths held a protest in front of the Mandya DC’s office and demanded a ban on burkha and hijab. They warned that if Muslim girl students were allowed to wear hijabs, they’d sport green shawls as they are from farming communities.
