DU student held for assaulting home guard, trying to snatch weapon

Bareilly: A 20-year-old Delhi University student was arrested in Bareilly on Thursday for allegedly assaulting a home guard on duty and attempting to snatch his service weapon outside an ATM in Prem Nagar area, police said.The accused, Shivay Kumar, is a resident of MB Inter College area and is pursuing a BCom from a college under Delhi University. His father works as a branch manager at a private insurance firm.Shivay got into an argument with a woman over scooter parking outside a bank ATM. When home guard Sitaram intervened and asked him to move the vehicle, Shivay got enraged. After the woman left, he entered the ATM booth but was unable to withdraw cash and came out visibly more agitated.Police said Shivay then grabbed the home guard by the collar, abused and assaulted him, and tried to snatch his service firearm.“An FIR was registered against Shivay under relevant sections of the BNS for assaulting and obstructing a govt servant on duty. He was taken into custody, questioned, and later produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody,” said CO First Ashutosh Shivam.A video from the lockup also surfaced in which Shivay was seen limping and folding his hands before police officers, saying he had made a mistake and would not repeat it.
