Ahmedabad: A local court in Ahmedabad on Tuesday sent Harshida Shetty, accused in a Rs 1.66 crore theft at a jewellery showroom in the Nikol area, to three-day police remand.
Shetty had been working at the store as a salesgirl for nearly a year. She allegedly hid chains, rings and mangalsutras inside her clothes before disappearing last week. CCTV footage reportedly showed her removing gold ornaments from one of the cupboards and hiding them in her pockets. The showroom owner later filed a complaint regarding the theft.
After her arrest, Nikol police produced her before a court at the Ahmedabad district court and sought seven days’ remand for custodial interrogation. The remand report stated that police were searching for a co-accused in the case, Mayur Mali, with whom she allegedly fled after the theft. Police said Mali took most of the jewellery that Shetty allegedly stole from the showroom.
The investigating officer sought her custodial interrogation for recovery of the stolen jewellery and to trace Mali, who is believed to have decamped with a major portion of the stolen gold. The investigator also wants to probe the alleged sale of some of the stolen articles in Delhi by the accused. Police are further investigating whether anyone else was involved in the alleged crime besides Shetty and Mali.
