New Ahmedabad mayor to be elected on May 26
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will hold its general body meeting on May 26 where the city mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee chairman will be named. Councillors Hitesh Barot from Thaltej ward and Dharamshi Desai from Bodakdev Ward are leading contenders for the mayoral role. The post is reserved for a male OBC councillor for two and a half years. Other names being considered include Jashubhai Thakor from Shahibaug ward, a former chairman of the health and solid waste management committee; and Rajesh Thakor (Vejalpur ward), who was elected for the second time and served as a whip in AMC. Paldi councillor Jainik Vakil is being considered for the standing committee chairman post. Outgoing chairman Devang Dani’s name too is being discussed for the position again, besides names of Ketan Patel (Gota), Paresh Patel (Vastral) and Paresh Lakhani (Nikol). It is likely that a woman councillor will be appointed deputy mayor, with Dr Chandni Patel (Lambha) being discussed for the role.
