Gujarat’s semiconductor sector gets 3,900cr push for 2 units
Ahmedabad: In a major push to Gujarat's semiconductor ecosystem, the Union cabinet on Tuesday approved two more semiconductor projects for the state with a combined investment of over Rs 3,900 crore. The proposals include the country's first commercial mini/micro-LED display facility based on gallium nitride (GaN) technology and a semiconductor packaging unit. Together, the projects are expected to generate around 2,230 skilled jobs, officials said.Crystal Matrix Limited will set up an integrated compound semiconductor fabrication and assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) facility at Dholera. The unit will manufacture mini/micro-LED display modules and offer GaN foundry services, including epitaxy on six-inch wafers. The proposed annual capacity includes 72,000 sq m of display panels and 24,000 sets of RGB wafers for applications ranging from televisions and smartphones to XR devices and smartwatches.Suchi Semicon Pvt Ltd will establish an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Surat to manufacture discrete semiconductors. The plant is expected to produce over 1,033 million chips annually, targeting segments such as power electronics, analog integrated circuits and industrial systems, with end-use across automotive, industrial automation and consumer electronics. With these approvals, the total number of projects cleared under India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is now 12, with a total investment of about Rs 1.64 lakh crore across India, the govt said.Gujarat has attracted investments of over Rs 1.24 lakh crore across four major semiconductor units, positioning Sanand and Dholera as the anchors of India's chip ecosystem. The largest is the Tata Electronics–PSMC semiconductor fab at Dholera, with an investment of about Rs 91,000 crore, currently under construction with SEZ notified and site development underway. In Sanand, Micron Technology's ATMP facility (Rs 22,000 crore) has entered initial production. Soon after, Kaynes Semiconductor's OSAT plant in Sanand was also operationalized, with the company investing Rs 3,300 crore. CG Power (with Renesas and Stars Microelectronics) is also setting up a large semiconductor OSAT plant in Sanand with an investment of approximately Rs 7,500 crore.
