Gujarat: Two suicide bids at Narmada canal foiled after Class 12 results

Ahmedabad: Timely intervention by the Gandhinagar police saved two schoolgirls who attempted to end their lives at the Narmada canal following the declaration of the Class 12 board results on Monday. One of the girls from Gandhinagar had failed to clear the exam, while the other had failed to get a good marks.Superintendent of police (Gandhinagar) Ravi Teja Vasamsetty said, "Anticipating such distress, we had deployed special patrolling teams across various canal points early morning." The preemptive operation, supported by the Jeevan Aastha Helpline and local volunteers, proved critical in two separate incidents. In the first, a minor girl from Gandhinagar, distraught after failing her exams, was spotted by patrolling officers as she stood alone near the water's edge on Monday evening. Noticing her suspicious behaviour, the team approached her. She broke down during the interaction, and revealed that she was distressed after failing the exam. The team intervened and brought her to safety.The second rescue took place on Tuesday morning when another girl, a resident of Naroda upset over low pass percentage, was spotted by patrols near the canal. Both students were safely moved from the site and provided professional counselling by Abhayam teams and helpline experts.With the Class 10 results scheduled for release this Wednesday, SP Vasamsetty confirmed that intensive patrolling will continue for the next 48 hours. He issued an urgent appeal to parents to remain vigilant and emotionally supportive. "Parents must be cautious and maintain open communication with their children," the SP said, noting that students often take extreme steps when academic results fall short of expectations.
