Head constable suspended, booked for illegally detaining man

Agra: A 30-yr-old man was allegedly illegally detained, harassed and extorted by police personnel after being stopped during a late-night checking drive in Aligarh’s Chandaus area last month. The incident led to the suspension of a head constable and registration of a corruption case against him.

In his complaint, Titu Singh, a farmer from Umri village who works at a private company, said he was returning home from Rami Nagla village on April 12 after visiting a sick relative when Police Response Vehicle personnel stopped his car for checking.

Despite carrying valid documents, Singh alleged that he was taken to the police station and kept in illegal custody. He claimed head constable Hari Om demanded Rs 50,000 for his release, following which his family paid Rs 25,000 under pressure. Singh further alleged that he was confined in a room behind the police station.

“When the remaining amount was not paid, police allegedly seized the car and issued a challan of Rs 30,000,” he claimed, adding that “the money was later returned after a complaint to a local public representative.”

After senior officials intervened, an inquiry found the head constable responsible. SSP Neeraj Kumar Jadaun suspended the accused constable, and a case was registered on May 9 under BNS section 127(2), wrongful confinement, and section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act at Chandaus police station. “A senior officer is probing the matter, and action will be taken accordingly,” Chandaus SHO Satyaveer Singh said.
