Agra: Two women on a scooter were allegedly chased and threatened by drunk policemen in a private car in
Uttar Pradesh’s Etah on Thursday evening. After a video of the incident circulated widely on social media, both accused cops were suspended by SSP Elamaran G on Friday.
The accused have been identified as sub-inspector Rahul Baliyan and head constable
Dharmendra Singh, both posted in Etah.
The incident happened on the busy GT Road under Kotwali Nagar police station limits. The two women were returning home from a local market when a private car, carrying the off-duty cops in plain clothes, began tailing them.
"We asked the car occupants to overtake once the road cleared, but they kept following us. Near a shopping mart, their car hit our scooter. They then misbehaved with us and threatened us after identifying themselves as policemen,” one of the victims told TOI.
During the argument, one of the women managed to snatch the head constable’s identity card. Realising the men were intoxicated, onlookers alerted the local police, who brought the two cops to the station.
In an official statement, additional SP Shwetabh Pandey confirmed that a prima facie inquiry was conducted following the viral video.
The accused personnel claimed they had only signaled the women to stop because the women had allegedly made obscene gestures toward them. However, medical examinations confirmed that both the cops were drunk at the time of the incident.
