Responding to queries at an earnings press conference Ashok Vaswani, MD & CEO said the bank would pursue deals only if they met three filters — strategic fit, financial viability and manageable execution without straining management bandwidth — and would apply the same criteria to evaluate Deutsche Bank’s assets. On IDBI, Vaswani said that Kotak had looked at the bank from every single position from a valuation perspective. “Obviously it was very highly valued. Of course, it has some kind of scale but it wasn’t really a must for us to do. Obviously, it would have been a difficult thing to swallow,” he said. Govt is reviewing how it should go about with a fresh bid to sell its stake in IDBI Bank, along with LIC’s. He added that had the bank been under the state govt’s administrative control, action would have already been initiated. “Prima facie, negligent staff would have been suspended. Since the bank is not under the state’s administrative control, the govt will forward the RDC report to the competent authorities and recommend action against the erring officials,” he said. The Odisha Grameen Bank Association, however, has threatened agitation, claiming the staff were not at fault. Rejecting the argument, Pujari said the bank staff have a responsibility to assist customers. “If a customer is uneducated and unable to understand procedures, it is the duty of the staff to guide him. The bank could have sought the required certificates by writing to the authorities,” he said. “Shirking responsibility is not good governance. Those claiming there was no lapse, need to introspect. If someone threatens agitation against legal action, they are free to do so,” the minister added. A day after the incident, the IOB defended its staff, saying they acted as per norms. It claimed the man, Jitu Munda (50), had visited the Malliposi branch for the first time in an inebriated state, became disruptive and later returned with human remains on Monday. In a statement, the finance ministry said that offer letters were sent to over 50,000 candidates in 2025-26 after the recruitment exercise conducted through the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). This adds to nearly 1.5 lakh employees recruited by the state-run lenders between 2019-20 and 2024-25. At end of March 2025, public sector banks, which control majority of business in the country, had 7,58,172 employees, according to data shared with Parliament. It was after a gap of several years that the headcount in govt-owned banks went up. With a little under 2.4 lakh employees at the end of FY25, State Bank of India, the country’s largest lender, accounted for nearly 31% of the headcount, followed by over one lakh at Punjab National Bank and 81,260 at Canara Bank. There were over one lakh contractual workers in these banks at the end of June 2025, govt had told Parliament. In Jan 2025, officers made up nearly 56% of the workforce, compared with 39% in 2011, indicating a shift in recruitment trends in recent years.
