Former U.S. President Donald Trump described Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “much tougher negotiator” than himself as trade tariffs took center stage during their bilateral meeting on Thursday.
“He is a much tougher negotiator than me. He is a better negotiator than me. There is not even a contest,” Trump said at a news conference following their discussions.
Earlier in the day, Trump unveiled a plan for a system of reciprocal tariffs and criticized India, calling it “just about the highest tariff nation anywhere in the world.”
"It's very hard to sell into India because they have trade barriers, very strong tariffs,” he said, reiterating his concerns over the U.S. trade deficit of $98.4 billion.
Threatening to impose reciprocal tariffs, Trump stated, “We are, right now, a reciprocal nation. We're gonna have whatever India charges (on imports from the U.S.), we're charging them.” He defended the move as fair for both American businesses and India.
Trump also revisited his long-standing grievance over Harley-Davidson motorcycles, claiming the company had to build a factory in India to bypass high tariffs. However, a White House factsheet on reciprocal tariffs included factually incorrect data, stating that India imposes a 100% tariff on U.S. motorcycles while the U.S. charges only 2.4% on Indian motorcycles. In reality, India had already reduced tariffs on larger Harley-Davidson models to 50%, and this month’s budget further lowered them to 30% for some models and 40% for others.
