Bondi Beach attack: Elderly couple tackle gunman before being shot dead — heroic act caught on cam
Dashcam footage captures an old couple trying to tackle the Bondi Beach shooter before ending up getting shot. The dramatic video captures the couple, Boris Gurman (69) and his wife, Sofia (61), wrestling with the gunman Sajid Akram.
Boris Gurman can be seen slowly approaching the gunman as he tackles him. Soon after, Sofia also jumps in to help. The gun gets knocked out of the shooter's hand. But Akram reportedly managed to get another gun, giving a tragic end to the couple's attempts.
The couple were shot and killed.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded the couple's bravery, calling them the "Australian heroes."
"I pay tribute to Boris and Sofia Gurman. Boris attacked one of these terrorists as he got out of the car," the Prime Minister said, "And that caused Mr and Ms Gurman to lose their lives."
The Gurman family gave their statement on the tragic event, acknowledging the bravery the couple had shown. "In recent days, we have become aware of footage showing Boris, with Sofia by his side, courageously attempting to disarm an attacker in an effort to protect others," they said.
They further shared that the painful event has caused them a great loss; however, their bravery has sent a true sense of pride for them.
"While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness," they said "This encapsulates who Boris and Sofia were -- people who instinctively and selflessly tried to help others."
The footage then shows another man, ducking in the parking lot, slowly approaching Akram. He then wrests the gun from the assailant's hand.
The man, later recognised as Ahmed al Ahmed, a fruit seller, was also praised a lot for his bravery. He was shot multiple times in the shoulder during his successful attempt to take the gunman down.
Albanese shared a video from his meeting with the brave man in the hospital following his treatment of the gunshot wounds. He thanked Ahmed for his bravery as he called him 'an Australian hero.'
"Ahmed, you are an Australian hero," he wrote. "On behalf of every Australian, I say thank you."

Because of these terrorists my son who is an Hindu and lives in Sydney harassed by whites yesterday. They see him as a Muslim from south Asia now. Somehow he escaped from them. He is very disturbed. He never faced this for the past eleven years. Due to these two radicalized fanatics all south Asians will suffer. It is going to happen all Western countries.Read allPost comment
