Kuwait announces launch of National Emergency Alert System amid ongoing US-Israel-Iran war

The Kuwait Ministry of Interior recently announced the pilot launch of a National Emergency Alert System using cellular broadcasting technology. The initiative was taken through the General Directorate of Civil Defence in cooperation with the Public Authority for Communications and Information Technology. During a media briefing, Lieutenant Colonel Yousef, head of the Alarm Systems Department at the ministry’s General Directorate of Civil Defense, said the system was designed to deliver immediate, secure and reliable alerts to mobile users during emergencies. The move is aimed at enhancing preparedness and public safety amid the ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, US and Israel. The national emergency alert system includes four alert levels: While users will be able to manage settings on their devices, the highest-level alerts will not be disabled. Authorities confirmed the system is currently supported on Android and Huawei devices while Apple compatibility is expected to arrive in the near future. In a separate statement made on Thursday, the Ministry of Defense announced that the country's air defence systems detected and engaged 18 drones in the past 24 hours amidst the current regional military escalation. The Kuwaiti Armed Forces effectively intercepted the hostile targets within the designated operational zones, said Ministry of Defense Spokesman Col Saud Al-Atwan. In such situations, the national emergency alert systems can be helpful in alerting residents to ongoing situations and helping them move to safety. The UAE also has a National Early Warning System which allows government agencies including National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, Dubai Police and the Ministry of Health and Prevention to issue public safety alerts to phones. It also uses the cellular broadcast technology with varied tones, notifying citizens of emergency situations.
