Lok Sabha Arithmetic Takes Center Stage As Opposition Moves No-Confidence Motion On Speaker Om Birla

The Lok Sabha is heading toward an intense political showdown after opposition parties moved a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla. The move accuses the Speaker of partisan conduct during heated proceedings in the recent Budget Session. But beyond the political rhetoric, the real battle lies in parliamentary arithmetic. The notice, signed by 118 MPs, must first secure the support of at least 50 members when it is called in the House before it can be admitted for debate. If that procedural step is cleared, the Lok Sabha will hold a debate followed by a vote on the resolution. For the motion to succeed, it needs at least 272 votes — a majority of the House’s total strength of 543 members. With the NDA holding around 293 MPs and the Opposition bloc roughly 238, the numbers currently favor the ruling alliance. Even so, the motion is set to trigger sharp political exchanges inside Parliament.
