AP fact check: Trump says Clinton favors a border wall
A claim from the final presidential debate and how it stacks up with the facts:

Donald Trump: "Hillary Clinton wanted the (border) wall. Hillary Clinton fought for the wall in 2006 or thereabouts. Now, she never gets anything done, so naturally it wasn't built."

The facts: Almost, but not quite. As a senator from New York, Clinton did support the 2006 Secure Fence Act, which authorized the construction of hundreds of miles of fencing along the US-Mexico border.

But it was built. Nearly 700 miles of fencing was put in place during President George W Bush's second term and the beginning of President Barack Obama's first term.

The fencing is placed largely in urban areas along the nearly 2,000-mile frontier. It is not the type of solid wall that Trump has pledged to construct at Mexico's expense. The fence has miles-long gaps and gates built in to allow landowners access to their property on the south side of the fencing. Immigrants have been known to go over and around the fence.

Why it matters: Abortion Law
The prime battleground over abortion is the Supreme Court, which regularly confronts legal challenges on the issue. The next president has one vacancy to fill on the high court and could have more.

A Clinton victory could strengthen the court's current 5-3 majority that supports abortion rights. A Trump win could lead to a reconfigured court that would uphold tough state laws restricting abortion and possibly consider overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that established a nationwide right to abortion.

Advocates on both sides have singled out the presidential election as the key to where the issue goes next.

06:41 (IST) Oct 20
Q: Where do you want to see the Court take the country?
Trump: We need a Supreme Court that needs to uphold the Second Amendment. I have 20 Justices that I will appoint. They are pro-life, and of a conservative bent, who will interpret the constitution how the founders wanted it to be.

Trump's guest list
Donald Trump's guest list for the third and final debate now includes Alaska governor Sarah Palin and a woman who has accused former President Bill Clinton of sexual harassment.

The GOP nominee's campaign confirms that the former vice presidential candidate will be in the audience. Also in attendance will be Leslie Millwee, a former Arkansas local reporter who claimed in an interview this week with Breitbart News that she was sexually assaulted by Bill Clinton three times in the 1980s.

Also attending is the mother of a man who was killed in the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi and President Barack Obama's half-brother.

Dollar steady as investors await US presidential debate
The dollar was steady in early trading on Thursday, as investors awaited the final debate before next month's US presidential election as well as a European Central Bank meeting later in the day.

"I'm not expecting the debate to be a major factor, unless there is a big surprise and Clinton performs poorly," said Mitsuo Imaizumi, chief currency strategist at Daiwa Securities in Tokyo.

"But if it's a fifty/fifty outcome, and neither candidate makes any new impression, then we won't see much reaction in markets," he said.
06:26 (IST) Oct 20
Character issues
Both candidates are likely to attack each other's character, as they have during a long and often nasty campaign.

Trump's White House bid has been marked by personal squabbles and controversial comments about immigration and minorities. Most recently, he has urged supporters to patrol polling places in inner cities to prevent voter fraud, and tried to fight off several allegations that he groped women.

Clinton has struggled to get past concerns about transparency raised over her handling of emails while she was secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.
06:25 (IST) Oct 20
For Clinton, who leads in national polls and in most of the battleground states where the election will likely be decided, the 90-minute debate is a chance to make a closing argument on why she is best suited to succeed fellow Democrat, President Barack Obama
