British tourists might be barred from entering EU from January 1

There is a possibility of British tourists getting barred from visiting the European Union from January 1. This is when all travel rules that are come with being a part of the EU will cease to exist for the UK, and COVID restrictions will block entry for the Britons. Year 2021 will also signal an end to unrestricted travel to EU countries, which was a privilege that was extended to residents of the UK previously. Read less
This also translates to the fact that only essential travel would be allowed from January 1. The pandemic travel restrictions that are in place currently state that only countries with low infection rates qualify for non-essential travel. Currently, there are only eight countries in the list, which is approved for free travel. These countries have low COVID infection rates, and there is no plan to add UK to the said list.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab talked to the BBC on the same, adding that "restrictions on travel, inevitably, is going to be something that's kept under review".
One of the ways out of this possible deadlock is the ongoing conversation on trade deals and the chance of a trade corridor between the UK and EU. It has to be noted that a number of regions in the UK as well as the EU are dependent on travel industry and a deadlock can have adverse implication for both the sides.
