Avoid the tourist crowds and sweltering heat
Word to the wise: The least popular months to visit Rome are February and November. Although the weather may be wet and miserable, the museums will be empty and there will be plenty of bargains to be had.
The best time to visit Rome is undoubtedly the shoulder season, May-June and September-October, when you can bask in the warm weather whilst avoiding the worst of the summer crowds.
While the winters are generally mild, summer in Rome can become stifling easily hitting temperatures of 35-40C in the midday sun. Of course, when in Rome, do as the Romans do - take a siesta in the burning afternoon, so you're rested and ready to hit the streets for a blissfully mild evening or join the masses for La Passeggiata - the evening stroll. Alternatively, you can get up extra early to enjoy the morning sunshine without the blistering heat.
Indeed many Romans tend to leave the city in August, and a large number of the best restaurants and bars are closed. If you are aiming towards a particular venue, it is advisable to first check whether its managers have planned any holidays.
