People's Square is a large public square in the Huangpu District of Shanghai. The square is the demarcation point of east Nanjing Road and west Nanjing Road. The open square occupies an area of 140,000 sq m. The area housed a famous horse racetrack before being transformed into a public park and a cultural hub in 1993. The Shanghai Museum occupies the most prominent central position in the square. The public square is lined by some of the most prominent buildings of Shanghai including the Shanghai Grand Theater and Urban Planning Exhibition Hall. There are several large underground structures located beneath the square including malls, plazas and the largest underground parking garage of Shanghai. The 600 m long People's Avenue crosses People's Square with a 5.5 m wide green belt in the middle. The green belt extending from the circular fountain attracts thousands of doves. Stroll around this pedestrian zone and admire the spaciousness in the heart of Shanghai. The serenity at People’s Square stands out in sharp contrast to the modern buzz of Shanghai.
