Located in Old Istanbul, the Grand Bazaar is known as Kapalıçarşı in Turkish, which means a ‘Covered Market’. The bazaar was established in 1460 in the form of a warehouse, primarily for silk trading. It eventually grew to cover a vast area of adjoining lanes and streets. The bazaar has been buzzing with traders since 15th century. With 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops, the Grand Bazaar is the oldest and the largest covered market in the world. You can find anything and everything in the market from tea, spices, lentils, jewellery, leather goods, furniture, carpets, clothing, lanterns and much more. There are tea shops and cafes as well as restaurants and kebab corners inside the bazaar. Wander around the narrow lanes and get lost in the labyrinth of the bazaar. Taking a break at one of the tea shops is a great way to observe the buzz in the market. It is the best place for souvenir shopping and to practise your bargaining skills. Do ensure to get there early to get the best deals.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
