Leipzig in the German federal state of Saxony grows on visitors gradually. But for music lovers, especially Western classical, visiting Leipzig is like a pilgrimage. Round every corner, in every nook and cranny, in squares and streets, in churches and concert halls, Leipzig reverberates with music. Though Leipzig’s history indicates that it was always a trading town, it is the city’s musical history that dominates. It is estimated that over 500 composers have lived in Leipzig over the last few centuries but none more famous than such as greats as Bach, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Beethoven, Telemann and Schumann, to name a few. But against the backdrop choirs, practicing in churches and orchestras tuning up in the stately concert halls, Leipzig also has beautiful churches, regal buildings and parks, museums and monuments dedicated to some of the greats of music. And then there are the beautiful streets, cobble-stoned and flanked by pretty buildings which are filled with buskers, rappers and Latino drum bands which prefer to pay homage in their own way. While those who prefer classical music and performance need not look further than the Gewandhaus or the Leipzig Opera, the city also has a vibrant restaurant scene and a rocking night life with buzzing pubs that offer more contemporary music.
