On a drinking spree in New Orleans

Within minutes of stepping into New Orleans’ French Quarter, it becomes abundantly clear that two things vie for attention – jazz and cocktails. Bar hopping in New Orleans is a definite fun for visitors here. Whether history, heritage or culture, New Orleans has gained the reputation of being the city of cocktails. Wandering around the streets of the French Quarter, there’s more than ample evidence that the epithet sits rather comfortably. Even during Prohibition, New Orleans didn’t even suffer hiccup and speakeasies, and bars were doing brisk business on the side or knew how to keep their customers satisfied. Many of those establishments are still going strong. And so, it really is a difficult task to decide where to have a drink. There are lovely, old worldly drinking holes and restaurants such as Napolean House, and bars inside hotels such as Carousel Bar in Monteleone Hotel which make the choice difficult. Besides, there are a number of cocktails that were invented here, and which are served across establishments such as the Sazerac, Absinthe Frappe, Hurricane, Ramos Gin Fizz, and Brandy Milk Punch. And then there are quirky ones like Hand Grenade, whose ingredients are secret but the concoction is thoroughly delectable. There are some companies which offer cocktail tours with interesting commentary, but it is also easy to wander around and sample them on your own.
