Unveiling the Biodiversity of Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary

Up in the Kumaon Himalayas, Uttarakhand, lies Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, a nature reserve that deserves all of our attention. It covers an area of approximately 45 sq km and the sanctuary is renowned for its diverse flora and fauna, breathtaking landscapes, and tranquil surroundings, making it a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the district of Almora in Uttarakhand. Back in 1988, the sanctuary was established with the aim of conserving the rich biodiversity of the region.


Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary boasts a remarkable variety of flora due to its diverse topography and altitudinal variation. The sanctuary is primarily covered with dense forest of oak and pine, but the burst of rhododendrons here and there leave Bisar looking no less than any wonderland.

The sanctuary is also home to an impressive array of wildlife. Deers and monkeys you will find plenty but the most striking feature of the sanctuary is its avian population. The sanctuary boasts over 200 species of birds. They include species such as the Eurasian jay, koklass pheasant, monal pheasant, and Himalayan woodpecker.



Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks of Nanda Devi, Panchachuli, Trishul, and Kedarnath. Additionally, there are several trekking trails that allow visitors to explore the sanctuary's beauty up close.


The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary plays a crucial role in the conservation of the region's biodiversity. The sanctuary also promotes ecotourism, offering visitors an opportunity to experience nature in its pristine form. There are forest rest houses and eco-lodges available for accommodation, providing a chance to stay amidst the serene surroundings.
