Kanheri Caves: A glimpse into the ancient Buddhist culture

Kanheri Caves are nestled amidst the lush greenery of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Here’s a fun fact for you, Sanjay Gandhi National Park is one of the very few national parks in the world that’s located inside the confines of a city. We can safely call this a refuge.

The Kanheri Caves, also known as the Kanheri Buddhist Monuments, hold significant historical and architectural importance. Its remarkable rock-cut architecture is something that easily captivates one’s attention. These sculptures represent the Buddhist architectural style prevalent during the period of their construction, that is, 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE.


Years of studies have revealed that these caves, chiseled out of the basaltic rock formations found in the region, once served as places of worship, meditation, and learning for Buddhist monks and followers.


You will find a number of viharas (monastic cells) and chaityas (prayer halls) inside the caves. Imagine the Buddhist monks residing in these small cells!



The caves are adorned with numerous intricate sculptures and reliefs depicting various aspects of Buddhism, such as the life of Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and other deities. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in these sculptures are beyond impressive.



Stupas are a prominent feature in Kanheri Caves. These and ornate pillars with carvings of mythical figures and motifs form a major part of the cave architecture. It is worth noting that the caves’ water management system was quite impressive. The complex has numerous rock-cut cisterns, tanks, and channels that were designed to collect and store rainwater, ensuring a sustainable water supply for the inhabitants.


It is safe to say that Kanheri Caves complex is one of the most impressive cave complexes in the country.
