Leon is a city that buzzes with excitement and energy, a city that boasts jaw-dropping streetscapes and towering churches, and a city that people fall in love with time and time again. The city is easily reached in just over an hour from the capital city of Managua by express or micro bus that drops visitors off at the somewhat chaotic main bus terminal. Sweltering heat and water shut-offs often plague Leon but that doesn’t stop people from going on with their day. This city has managed to find the perfect blend of tradition and modernity, offering Hollywood blockbusters at its movie theatres while holding onto traditions such as printing poetry in the daily newspaper. You won’t find any American chain restaurants here, instead you will find local places such as Pan y Paz where the chocolate croissants ooze with deliciousness and the coffee is incredible. Days can be spent here indulging in activities such as volcano boarding, cooking classes, shopping and hiking up one of the surrounding volcanoes. Don’t miss out on heading to the top of the cathedral in the town to catch the most amazing views of the city. There are plenty of hostels and hotels to choose from here, no matter what your budget is.
