Mrinal Sen’s 1959 cult classic 'neel akasher Neechey' was the first movie to be banned in independent India. The black and white Bengali film against the backdrop of 1930s India under British rule wasn’t allowed to release as it explored an India where the rich and socially progressed class didn’t have any sympathy towards the disadvantaged despite living under the same roof.

Smriti Biswas Narang passed away peacefully at her Nashik Road residence at the age of 100. Her career included roles alongside stars like Dev Anand and Kishore Kumar before she retired from acting upon marrying film director S.D. Narang in 1960. After relocating to Bombay, Smriti made notable appearances in 1950s films including "Pehla Admi" by Bimal Roy, "Bhaagam Bhaag" by A.R. Kardar with Kishore Kumar, and "Baap Re Baap" by Bhagwan Dada. Her contributions left a lasting impact on the film industry during her illustrious career.
