The Chhattisgarh High Court has initiated a suo motu PIL, directing the state government to establish and expand Open Correctional Institutions (OCIs) as per Supreme Court mandates. A monitoring committee will be formed within four weeks to oversee OCI development and prisoner reintegration, with a status report due by August 21, 2026.

Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul praised Justice S Ravindra Bhat for his contributions to the judiciary during a farewell ceremony. Justice Bhat, who has served for over four years, was commended for his significant contributions and jurisprudential developments. Justice Bhat expressed gratitude to his colleagues and emphasized the importance of inquiry, independence, empathy, and compassion.

Justice Bhat, who will be sworn in on May 5 at a formal function at Raj Bhavan in Jaipur, was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi high court 16, 2004. He became a permanent judge on February 20, 2006.

Justice Sripathi Ravindra Bhat, who is set to retire from the Supreme Court, will not be part of the traditional ceremonial bench on his last day. This bench usually includes the retiring judge and the Chief Justice of India. Justice Bhat's decision to deny civil union and adoption rights to same-sex couples, while unanimously declining the legalization of marriage for queer couples, led to criticism from other judges.
