The decommissioned aircraft carrier will be grouted (grounded, sealed to the seabed with concrete and moored) seven nautical miles off the Malvan coast at Nivati rocks in Sindhudurg. An official said viraat will host biodiversity centres and a marine adventure centre providing sailing and scuba-diving experiences, virtual galleries and cafeterias.

At 7.20am on Sunday, officers of the Southern Naval Command (SNC) lined up at Ernakulum Warf, waving their hats, as INS viraat bid adieu to the shores of Kochi.

Indian Navy's decommissioned aircraft carrier viraat on Saturday set sail for the last time, on way to Alang in Gujarat, where it will be broken down and sold as scrap. As viraat began its final journey from the Naval dockyard, a Navy helicopter circling overhead provided a majestic backdrop to the vessel's last voyage.

"Rajiv Gandhi was on board the aircraft carrier for two-three days on official duty as the PM," the naval officers, who were on board INS viraat, said. No foreign nationals like Sonia Gandhi’s mother or friends of the Gandhis like film star Amitabh Bachchan ever embarked on INS viraat, as is being alleged, added the officers.

A US intelligence unit has alerted Indian security agencies about a possibility of the Lashkar-e-Taiba carrying out an airborne attack on the Indian warship INS viraat.

INS viraat, the aircraft carrier commissioned in 1987, may be brought to Mangaluru to set up an Aircraft Carrier Museum if a proposal in this regard was approved.

The 28,000-tonne aircraft carrier has left from Goa for its last tour of duty. It is the oldest aircraft carrier still in service in the world. It has been in the Indian Navy for close to 30 years, and had served as its flagship till 2013. It was the second aircraft to be inducted into the Navy. INS viraat is headed for Visakhapatnam to take part in the International Fleet Review from February 5 to 8.

The longest serving warship INS viraat will begin its last journey on Friday from Mumbai to reach Alang in Bhavnagar where it will be dismantled.
