Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky has revealed that he uses artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots to analyse his bloodwork and determine which nutritional supplements he needs. During a "TBPN" livestream earlier this week, Chesky said he uploaded his bloodwork PDF to an AI chatbot for analysis, discovered he was low in Vitamin D, and began taking supplements. While he relies on a personal trainer, who is a former Mr Universe, for his workouts, he uses AI specifically for nutrition and supplement guidance.
The 44-year-old cofounder's comments came during a broader discussion about the tech community's embrace of fitness, a shift Chesky said surprised him, given Silicon Valley's culture when he arrived in the late 2000s.
What Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said about his workout routine
On the livestream, the topic of fitness initially came up after co-host John Coogan said, "
The chat is begging us to ask you for an arm routine.""Genetically, I have better arms than shoulders or chests," Chesky, wearing a black, fitted, short-sleeve shirt, said, adding he does not have a dedicated arm day and instead works arms with shoulders.
He also noted that he usually does two bicep exercises and two tricep exercises,
"typically a compound free weight movement and a machine movement." For example, he mentioned that his bicep workout may include a dumbbell curl followed by a Hammer Strength cable exercise with a rope or V bar. To compare, his tricep workout consists of a cable pushdown and possibly a skull crusher.
What made Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky self-conscious when he first came to Silicon Valley
"When I came to Silicon Valley, I was slightly self-conscious about wearing long-sleeve shirts because I thought if I wore a short-sleeve shirt, people would think I'm a meathead and therefore an idiot. People just didn't really lift weights in 2007 and 2008," Chesky told the "TBPN" hosts.
Before starting Airbnb, Chesky played hockey in college and competed in bodybuilding, an interest that began after an injury led him to physical therapy. His interest in bodybuilding made him stand out when he arrived in Silicon Valley, and not in a positive way.
Chesky told the podcast hosts that he was pleased to see more people embracing fitness and following the science on nutrition and weightlifting. He also said that many of the lessons he learnt through bodybuilding, he applied to his work in Silicon Valley.
"You don't get in shape in one workout. It's 1% a day," he said. Similarly, in Silicon Valley. It's not about one idea. It's about grinding every single day, year over year, with consistency. Overnight successes take thousands of days, actually, typically," he noted.
Far from being out of place these days, the connection between tech and fitness only appears to be growing, with major AI companies expanding into healthcare and tech billionaires investing heavily in longevity.
At the event, Chesky also discussed Airbnb's announcement that Ahmad Al-Dahle, formerly head of Meta's generative AI team, would join the company as its CTO. Chesky has previously shared his plan for Airbnb to become an AI-first app.
