Alibaba unveils ‘highest performing RISC-V CPU in the world’ to power ‘Agentic AI’
Alibaba has unveiled its most powerful processor to date, the XuanTie C950. The company claims that the chip, announced during an internal conference, is the “highest performing RISC-V CPU in the world”. Furthermore, the new 5-nanometer chip marks a major milestone in China’s push for semiconductor independence and the next phase of artificial intelligence (AI).A report by news agency Reuters said that the chip has been developed by Alibaba’s chip-making arm, T-Head and the XuanTie C950 is built on RISC-V, an open-source architecture that allows companies to design chips without paying heavy licensing fees to Western firms.Citing to reports from the DAMO Academy conference, Reuters said that C950 runs at 3.2 GHz and is three times faster than its predecessor, the C920. Further, by using a 5-nanometer process, the chip can fit more power into a smaller, more energy-efficient space. Notably, Alibaba has not revealed which factory (or "fab") actually manufactured the high-end 5nm hardware.

Why Alibaba’s AI chip matters

Alibaba is building chips to support AI Agents – sophisticated AI-software that – unlike a standard chatbot that just answers questions – can autonomously perform complex tasks such as managing a supply chain or running business operations for a small company.
"RISC-V’s open-standard nature allows us to customize the chip specifically for AI workloads," Alibaba stated in a blog post. This customisation is critical for "agentic AI," which requires massive amounts of real-time processing power. Moreover, the launch of the C950 comes at a time of intense competition in the Chinese tech market, which is witnessing a drop in price of “tokens” – the basic units of data used by AI models. To remain profitable, Alibaba is shifting its focus toward high-value enterprise platforms.Alibaba recently launched these Wukong & Accio Work platform – Wukong for domestic use and Accio Work for international markets. A newly-created division, Alibaba Token Hub, focused entirely on building AI work platforms for large companies has also been established. Finally, through its T-Head semiconductor division, Alibaba is now covering both ends of the AI infrastructure – it has Zhenwu 810E chips focus on “training” the AI and the new XuanTie series is built for the “cloud” and “inference”.By designing its own high-performance chips, Alibaba aims to insulate itself from global supply chain issues while providing a specialized "brain" for the next generation of autonomous business software.
