George Pickens has barely settled into Dallas, yet fresh trade chatter is already circling around the Cowboys’ star receiver. A viral social media post this week linked the New Orleans Saints as favorites to land Pickens, sparking debate about whether Dallas truly sees him as a long-term cornerstone or simply a short-term offensive weapon.
The speculation intensified after NFL insider James Palmer revealed that the Dallas Cowboys may be far less committed to a massive extension than many expected. For a player coming off a dominant season, the timing of the rumors has raised eyebrows across the league.
George Pickens-Saints trade speculation explodes after viral prediction
A social media post from MLFootball sent NFL fans into frenzy after claiming the New Orleans Saints had become the favorites to trade for George Pickens. The post cited predictive market odds suggesting nearly a 50 percent chance that the receiver could land in New Orleans.
The idea instantly grabbed attention because of how explosive the fit could look on paper. Pairing Pickens with Chris Olave and Jordyn Tyson would give the Saints one of the league’s most athletic receiver groups. Young quarterback Tyler Shough would suddenly have a dangerous set of targets capable of stretching defenses all over the field.
While there is no official indication that a deal is close, the rumor gained traction because it arrived at a strange moment in Pickens’ Dallas future. The Cowboys already placed the franchise tag on the receiver for the 2026 season, locking him in at $27.3 million. Normally, that move signals stability. Instead, the latest reporting suggests uncertainty may still exist behind the scenes.
That uncertainty feels surprising considering Pickens delivered elite production last year. With CeeDee Lamb battling a high ankle sprain for stretches of the season, Pickens became the centerpiece of the offense. He finished with 93 catches, 1,429 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns while consistently creating explosive plays downfield.
Cowboys insider update hints George Pickens extension remains unlikely
During an appearance on the
Up & Adams Show, NFL reporter James Palmer offered a blunt assessment of the situation in Dallas.
“I think it’s close to zero,” Palmer said. “I really do. I haven’t heard anything from that building during this entire time that they were planning on giving him a contract extension. I really hadn’t, and it’s for a few reasons. They know, and George knows this … there was a reason he was drafted where he was drafted because of Georgia."
"There was a reason why the Cowboys were the only team offering a trade for him … and they got him for a third-round pick because of what happened in Pittsburgh. Now they liked what they saw for a year, but it’s still a small sample in Stephen and Jerry Jones’ eyes …”
Palmer then revealed that Dallas may already be exploring other possibilities instead of preparing a blockbuster extension.
“… The $27 million tag was always kind of the plan,” Palmer continued. “They think they can have the best offense in football this year … I just think they need to see more. I think there have been some conversations of, ‘If we traded him, what could we get?’ I think those have been more frequent than a contract extension.”
For now, Pickens remains a Cowboy. Still, with the Saints rumors growing louder and Dallas seemingly hesitant to commit long term, this story may only be getting started.
