Adrenaline runs high. Excitement goes through the roof. But players channel that energy in different ways—some through touchdown celebratory dance moves, others through unsportsmanlike conduct. In Week 1, during the New York Jets’ matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, viewers saw the latter.
On September 14,
NFL Insider Tom Pelissero reported on X that the NFL fined Jets edge rusher Will McDonald IV $14,491 for a violent gesture—pretending to throw a grenade after sacking
Aaron Rodgers. With Jalen Carter already losing a game check for spitting on Dak Prescott, the league docked players a total of $129,678 for unsportsmanlike conduct in Week 1.

Back in March, ESPN’s NFL Analyst Benjamin Solak posted an image on X showing Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1(d) from the NFL’s official rules report sent to teams.
The rule states—There shall be no unsportsmanlike conduct. This applies to any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship. Such acts specifically include, among others: Any violent gesture, which shall include but not be limited to a throat slash, simulating firing or brandishing a gun, or using the “nose wipe” gesture, or an act that is sexually suggestive or offensive. Will McDonald mirrored the Ja Morant celebration
In the third quarter of the Jets–Steelers matchup, McDonald sacked the veteran quarterback. After the play, he mimed throwing a grenade and then turned around to cover his ears.
Malik Brown of
ClutchPoints noted that after McDonald’s move mirrored the Ja Morant celebration, which looks like he’s throwing an explosive in the air and covering his ears.
Ja Morant is NBA's Memphis Grizzlies' point guard.
According to the NFL, this constitutes a violent gesture and falls under unsportsmanlike conduct. The league sent a clear message to the defensive end for his conduct. However, he was not suspended and will be available to play Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills.
