The Miami Dolphins head into their Week 18 regular-season finale with more questions than answers, and the biggest one surrounds star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. With Miami already eliminated from playoff contention, the focus has shifted from results to player health and Waddle’s availability is now firmly in doubt.
Is Jaylen Waddle playing in Week 18?
As of the latest reports, Waddle is not expected to play in Week 18 against the New England Patriots. NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Miami is likely to hold Waddle out of the season finale, prioritising recovery over risk in a game with no postseason implications for the Dolphins.
While Waddle was officially listed as questionable earlier in the week, the direction has consistently pointed toward caution. Miami has little incentive to push one of its most valuable offensive pieces in a low-stakes matchup.
Waddle is dealing with a rib injury suffered during Miami’s Week 17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The injury occurred early in the first quarter on an end-around run, after which Waddle was seen clutching his side before heading to the locker room. Although he briefly returned later in the game, he was clearly limited and finished the contest without a reception.
Rib injuries can be tricky, especially for receivers who rely on speed, sharp cuts, and absorbing contact over the middle. With no playoff pressure, the Dolphins appear content to let Waddle fully heal rather than risk aggravation.
What does this mean for the Dolphins in Week 18?
Waddle has been one of the few players that has stayed the same for Miami in a chaotic 2025 campaign. He ends the season with 64 catches for 910 yards and six touchdowns, making him the team's top receiver in all key categories. After injuries and inconsistency hurt the Dolphins' offense, including changes at quarterback and the absence of key playmakers surrounding him, his production became even more important
Despite catching passes from multiple quarterbacks throughout the year, Waddle maintained efficiency, averaging over 14 yards per catch and routinely drawing defensive attention as Miami’s primary downfield threat.
If Waddle is officially ruled out, Miami’s receiving group will be led by a mix of younger and rotational players. Malik Washington, Cedrick Wilson Jr., and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine are expected to take on larger roles, with the offense likely scaled back as the Dolphins simply look to get through the finale healthy.
For Waddle, the decision is straightforward. Sitting out Week 18 closes the book on his 2025 season but it also sets him up to enter the offseason healthy, which is ultimately far more valuable for Miami’s long-term plans.
Unless there’s a late surprise before kickoff, all signs point to Jaylen Waddle watching in Week 18.
