Marshawn Lynch did not hedge his words. The former Seattle Seahawks running back publicly blasted Hall of Fame voters after Bill Belichick failed to receive enough votes for first-ballot induction in 2026.
Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach, fell short of the 40-of-50 vote threshold. The result sparked league-wide debate. Lynch’s reaction, delivered on the Feb. 19 episode of “Get Got Podcast,” quickly became one of the strongest responses yet.
Marshawn Lynch questions how a six-time Super Bowl coach is not first-ballot worthy
Lynch reacted bluntly when asked about Belichick missing the cut. “Fk them ngas. That nga ain't a first ballot nga. Who da f**k won more Super Bowls?” he said.
He continued by arguing that if voters believed Belichick violated rules during his career, the league should have handled it at the time. “If that nia was cheating, then deal with that sh then.”
Reports indicate Belichick’s ties to the Spygate and Deflategate scandals factored into voting hesitation. One voter said, “The only explanation [for the outcome] was the cheating stuff. It really bothered some of the guys.”
Belichick was previously disciplined for Spygate. Commissioner Roger Goodell fined him $500,000, calling it a “calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid long-standing rules,” and the New England Patriots forfeited a 2008 first-round pick.
Lynch points to his own suspension history while arguing the league applies discipline unevenly
Lynch compared Belichick’s situation to his own disciplinary record. In 2009, he was suspended three games, later reduced to two, for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy after pleading guilty to a gun charge. He lost $112,000 in salary, completed 80 hours of community service, and received three years’ probation.
He said the league acted immediately in his case but allowed Belichick’s controversies to linger as a reputation issue. “They said I was smoking weed, and all this shi-, and they never called me for tests, and they suspended me for four games, like I was a motherf***** crackhead ni****. But they suspended me for that, they dealt with the situation then, and what the problem was right there and then. But they didn’t do that with this ni***.”
Hall of Fame voter Peter King noted the decision could affect future ballots. “It pushes all three of these coaches back a year. You have to ask yourself: What does the coaches committee do next year? Are they going to again advance Belichick? Wouldn’t it be embarrassing if they don’t?”
Belichick finished his career with a 333-178 record, six Super Bowl titles, and nine conference championships. He remains eligible for future classes.
