Is Dave Rogers the right choice for Team USA? Evaluating his fit for the 2028 Summer Olympics

The manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Dave Roberts, has publicly said that he would like to coach the United States baseball team in the Summer 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, a first in history opportunity that would coincide with MLB having the opportunity to take part in the Games. The fact that baseball will be played at Dodger Stadium in the 2028 Olympics will add weight to Roberts ' announcement.

Roberts highlights experience and Los Angeles roots

Roberts, being an alumnus of UCLA and a long-time Dodgers skipper, pointed out that his connection to the area and his experience in the baseball industry qualified him perfectly to take over the position. “In L.A., I would like to handle that team,” he said in an interview with the California Post, and he continued by saying that no one is more apt to handle that than him.


Since Roberts joined the Dodgers in 2016, he has seen the team win a total of three World Series and the championships in three consecutive seasons. This track record has increased his profile not only in the franchise but also in the MLB, and he sees the possibility of taking his career as a manager to the international arena as the next step.

Opportunity and participation in MLB

Baseball as a sport does not appear in the 2024 Paris Olympics sporting events. The biggest queries that may be raised over the reintroduction of baseball to the Olympics are whether the players of Major League Baseball would be permitted even in the Olympics. MLB has never before taken a break during the Olympics to play its season, and players were not allowed to participate in the recent Games because of timing.


Commissioner Rob Manfred and league officials have, however, expressed increasing optimism that the MLB players will be included in the 2028 Beijing Olympics in case an effective agreement can be struck with the MLB Players Association as well as the team owners. Concepts like a longer All-Star game have been mentioned to incorporate the Olympic competition without reducing the number of games in the regular season (162).

Assuming that MLB works out a scheme that would enable it to get involved, Roberts might end up celebrating at home as a manager who won the World Series and, at the same time, spearhead the United States in the most significant international display of the sport.
