Cole Hocker, the Olympic 1500m champion from the USA, was disqualified at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, on Monday, September 15, 2025. The 24-year-old crossed the line in second place in his semifinal. But officials said he broke the rules. He was removed for “jostling” after bumping into Robert Farken of Germany. The US team appealed, but judges turned it down. Hocker’s dream of running in Wednesday’s final ended in shock.
Cole Hocker disqualified from 1500m semifinal after contact with Robert Farken
With 100 metres left, Cole Hocker was trapped on the inside lane. He had no clear space. Then a small gap opened between Robert Farken of Germany and Stefan Nillessen of the Netherlands. Hocker charged through it. His shoulder brushed Farken. The German lost rhythm and dropped back.
Hocker sprinted clear and finished second. But the officials checked the video. They ruled that his contact gave him an unfair advantage. Under World Athletics Rule 17.1.2, that is “jostling.”
After the race, Hocker explained. “It was tight. I was looking for any kind of gap I could find,” he said. “I tried to get through as cleanly as possible. I got a little trapped, but I trusted my instincts.”
His instincts, this time, did not pay off.
Robert Farken advanced as USA appeal rejected and other stars qualify
The USA team appealed the ruling. They asked judges to let Hocker back into the results. The appeal failed. The officials stood by their call.

The fastest qualifier was Niels Laros of the Netherlands. Great Britain’s Josh Kerr and Jake Wightman, the last two world champions, also made it. America still has one runner in the final, Jonah Koech, who qualified cleanly.
Hocker’s fall was one of the biggest shocks in Tokyo. The Olympic champion had been tipped for another medal. Now he must wait for his next chance.
