Jutta Leerdam’s Olympic dream hit a painful roadblock Friday night in Heerenveen. Her fiancée,
Jake Paul, was there to extend his support. The Dutch speed skater crashed during her signature 1000m event at the national Olympic Trials, losing balance on the second bend and sliding hard into the boards. After the fall, she exited the rink with tears in her eyes.
Paul, watching from trackside, offered immediate support. The result placed Leerdam’s path to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan under the control of the national selection committee. It will be determined upon performance through evaluation.

Jake Paul later shared his reaction, “It’s really, really hard. And I know this is her whole life. Her whole dream. And everything she’s worked so hard for. My heart is broken,” he told reporters. He pointed to how quickly the race unraveled despite a strong start, adding, “This sport is so bizarre. She could just show up at the starting line and go again. And she had such a fast opening.”

The boxer also posted a message on Instagram, sharing footage of Leerdam skating with the caption, “So proud of you warrior @juttaleerdam.” His presence itself was praiseworthy, given his own recent injury, as he continues to recover from a broken jaw suffered in his bout with Anthony Joshua.

Leerdam struggled to explain what caused the fall, describing a sudden loss of control. “I don't know if there was anything on the ice, but it felt like I was standing on something. I completely slid,” she said. She stressed how sharp she had felt leading into the race, adding, “[I’ve been] riding so well in practice. What those girls are riding here, I could have easily ridden today.”
“I've won the past World Cups. I've always finished at least in the top two at the world level ... I really want to win that medal for the Netherlands ... I hope they'll look at my level, including today. How I rode before I fell. And the growth I'm making,” Leerdam said.
Her Olympic fate now rests with the selection committee, which weighs medal potential across the season. While the 1000m remains her priority, Leerdam returned to competition in the 500m, finishing second and keeping her case alive.
