Islam Makhachev believes Sean Strickland could give UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev a much tougher fight than many fans expect at UFC 328. The lightweight star recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming title clash and explained why Strickland’s toughness and ability to stand back up after takedowns may create serious problems for Chimaev over five rounds.

Makhachev compared Strickland’s style with Dricus du Plessis, who previously struggled against Chimaev’s grappling pressure. According to Makhachev, Strickland’s constant movement, cardio, and refusal to stay grounded could force the champion into a far more demanding fight. UFC commentator Joe Rogan also backed Strickland’s chances, saying the former champion has the experience and defensive skills needed to trouble Chimaev in a championship contest.

Islam Makhachev recently revealed that he discussed the matchup with teammates during training camp. He said Khanzat Chimaev could dominate early if he successfully controls the wrestling exchanges, but the fight would become difficult if it reaches the championship rounds. He explained that Sean Strickland differs from many opponents because he constantly works to get back on his feet instead of accepting bottom position.

The Russian star added that fighters from Xtreme Couture had told him about Strickland’s persistence during sparring sessions. Makhachev shared that welterweight fighter Ramazan Kuramagomedov described Strickland as someone who repeatedly stands up immediately after takedowns and continues striking without slowing down. Makhachev also called Strickland unpredictable and mentally tough or “unhinged” inside the cage.

The matchup is expected to revolve around Chimaev’s aggressive wrestling against Strickland’s defensive style. Chimaev is known for explosive takedowns, heavy pressure, and control on the ground. Meanwhile, Strickland usually relies on high-volume striking, constant pressure, and solid cardio to wear opponents down over long fights.

Joe Rogan also believes Strickland has a genuine chance to upset the undefeated champion. Speaking on his podcast, the longtime UFC commentator praised Strickland’s five-round experience, stamina, and underrated grappling skills. Rogan said Strickland is difficult to hit cleanly and owns some of the best defensive wrestling in the division.

He also suggested Strickland’s constant trash talk could create a mental challenge for Chimaev, similar to how Conor McGregor psychologically affected Jose Aldo during their famous rivalry.
