Watch: Formula E veteran Lucas Di Grassi reveals the right way to pop champagne this New Year
Lucas Di Grassi is the senior-most driver on the Formula E grid. The Brazilian continues to race for Lola Yamaha ABT and is just the fourth Formula E driver aged over 40 to have stepped onto the podium. On New Year’s Eve, Di Grassi popped a bottle of champagne and shared a video showing fans the right way to do it. His followers were impressed by his technique, which allowed him to open the bottle at a house party without creating a mess.
In the clip, the Formula E star, dressed in a white shirt and matching shorts, stood by the pool as party music played in the background. He gently rubbed a wine glass around the bottle’s neck before knocking out the cork using the base of the glass.
Reacting to the video, one fan wrote, “A pilot with multiple podiums knows exactly how to pop champagne.” Another commented, “What’s up man! He’s good for physics, eh! Happy 2026!” One fan even explained the technique to others, writing, @darioborges and @felipeazv brought this technique to Brazil in the 90s. Another comment read, “Is this witchcraft? Congratulations.”
The photo dump highlighted his Formula E journey last season. The cover image featured Di Grassi on the podium at the Miami E-Prix, where he finished second. The Brazilian also shared candid glimpses of his son, Leonardo, sitting in a kart, hinting that the youngster may be following in his father’s footsteps by taking up karting at an early age. The post also included red carpet moments with his wife, Bianca Diniz Caloi, along with a shot of Di Grassi wearing the special Superman race suit he donned for one of the races last year.
Lucas Di Grassi won the 2016–17 Formula E Championship with ABT and continues to compete in the all-electric racing series. The 41-year-old has recorded 41 podium finishes, including 13 victories, and has claimed four pole positions during his Formula E career.
