Defending Premier League champions Liverpool F.C. reached an unwanted milestone on Friday night, conceding 50-plus goals in a 38-game Premier League season for the first time in the club’s history. The Reds’ defensive nightmare culminated in a chaotic 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa F.C. at Villa Park, leaving their Champions League hopes hanging in the balance.Heading into the crucial clash, both teams knew a victory would significantly strengthen their chances of securing a top-five finish and Champions League qualification. It was Villa, however, who rose to the occasion with a deserved win over the reigning champions.Already out of the title race, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot had demanded a disciplined defensive performance from his side after they had already conceded 48 goals this season. Instead, Liverpool suffered another tactical collapse.Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for the hosts in the 42nd minute following a well-worked set-piece routine. In the second half, Ollie Watkins struck twice before John McGinn added a stunning late goal in the 88th minute, exposing Liverpool’s fragile backline once again.
Even a fighting brace from captain Virgil van Dijk could not hide the alarming defensive issues. With his two headed goals, Van Dijk now holds the record for the most headed Premier League goals scored for Liverpool, with 22.The four goals conceded pushed Liverpool’s tally to an embarrassing 52 goals leaked in 37 league matches, surpassing their previous worst of 50 goals conceded during the 2013-14 campaign under Brendan Rodgers. The Merseyside club now ranks among the league’s weakest defensive sides this season.Liverpool’s struggles against quick transitions and high-pressing opponents have consistently hurt them throughout the campaign. The lack of protection from midfield has repeatedly left the central defenders isolated and vulnerable, something Villa exploited brilliantly through Unai Emery’s aggressive counter-attacking setup.Depending on other results, Liverpool may now need to defeat Brentford F.C. on the final matchday to guarantee qualification for next season’s Champions League alongside Aston Villa.
