WPL: Nat Sciver-Brunt makes history as MI edge RCB in thriller
Nat Sciver-Brunt delivered a historic knock, becoming the first-ever centurion in WPL history with a sensational unbeaten 100 from 57 balls in Vadodara on Monday. Her knock, laced with 16 boundaries and a six, drove Mumbai Indians (MI) to a formidable 199/4, anchored by a dominant 131-run partnership with Hayley Matthews (56; 39b; 9x4).
As MI turned to defend the total, Matthews switched roles brilliantly, claiming a three-wicket haul to dismantle RCB’s chase that helped seal a 15-run victory for the defending champions.
The West Indies off-spinner, in tandem with Shabnim Ismail (2-25), ripped through RCB’s top-order to leave them reeling at 31/4 in 4.1 overs before a twist in the tale.
Richa Ghosh produced a valiant lone fight, smashing a belligerent 90 off 50 balls (10x4; 6x6) to bring the target down to 32 required off the final over. It was not enough to take RCB over the line.
The win provided much-needed relief for defending champions MI, snapping a disappointing threematch losing streak, while simultaneously handing RCB their second consecutive loss after their blistering start of five straight wins to open the tournament.
Earlier, made to bat first, 33-year-old Sciver-Brunt walked in at one-down following the early dismissal of opener Sajeevan Sajana. She seized control of the game immediately, racing to her fifty off 32 balls before going on to complete a magnificent hundred.
In the presence of the English allrounder, Matthews’ own confidence visibly swelled and MI’s innings gathered explosive momentum after the 10th over. The duo tore apart RCB’s formidable bowling lineup, widely regarded as the strongest of the tournament.
Brief scores: MI 199/4 (Nat SciverBrunt 100*, Hayley Matthews 56) beat RCB 184/8 (Richa Ghosh 90*, Hayley Matthews 3/10) by 15 runs.
